U-BT Secures Its EuroCup Spot Until 2031. Romanian Champions Receive Five-Year License

U-Banca Transilvania will continue to compete in the EuroCup for the next five years. The Romanian champions have been granted a license covering the 2026-2031 period, securing their long-term place in Europe’s second most important club competition after the EuroLeague.

The 2026-2027 season will be U-BT’s fifth consecutive campaign in the EuroCup. During that time, the Cluj-Napoca side has established itself as a regular contender in the latter stages of the competition.

The new license comes after the most successful European period in the club’s history. U-BT reached the EuroCup quarter-finals in 2024, 2025 and 2026, confirming its status as one of the competition’s strongest teams.

EuroCup to Introduce a New Format

The 2026-2027 edition will bring major changes to the competition.

The number of participating teams will increase from 20 to 32, with clubs divided into four groups of eight teams each.

The group stage will be played in a home-and-away format, while the top four teams from each group will qualify for the Round of 16.

The knockout system will also change.

In previous seasons, the Round of 16 and quarter-finals were decided in a single game. Starting next season, every playoff round, from the Round of 16 through to the final, will be played in a best-of-three series format.

Twenty-Two Clubs Receive Five-Year Licenses

U-BT Cluj is among the 22 clubs that have received five-year licenses for the EuroCup.

Another 10 teams will take part in the 2026-2027 season under one-year licenses.

The full list of participants has not yet been finalized. Competition organizers still have to announce the club that will receive the remaining wild card before the group stage draw takes place.
